While we may not be able to control fuel prices, political strife, the weather or any other factors that affect the rising cost of food, there are some ways to get the most bang for your nonprofit buck. Here are some tips from FoodSource Plus as a way to lower your bottom line:

Request an audit of your receipts and invoices from FoodSource Plus.

We will be able to compare the pricing you are getting from your current vendor with the pricing you should be getting as a human service organization. By enrolling in the FoodSource Plus program, you will get the nonprofit rate on the food, dairy, paper and janitorial supplies your organization is buying. The audit of your invoices is free and implies no obligation for you to participate in the program, so you have nothing to lose.

Keep your distributor honest.

When you first sign a contract or award a bid to a distributor, chances are, you are happy with the prices they have quoted you. But beware, as you may find that your costs start creeping up over time. Commodity pricing changes, but should not deviate more than 3-4%. Double check your invoices to ensure you are getting the pricing you deserve. Also be aware that the distributor may be gouging you on products that were not quoted when you initially started. Or better yet, call FoodSource Plus for a cost analysis to see if you are getting the best pricing.

Shop around.

Pricing for your program may differ drastically from one distributor to the next. Part of the deviation has to do with the distributor’s sales representative and how much he or she is adding to food costs for his or her own commission. With FoodSource Plus, there is no salesperson and therefore, no extra cost. Make sure that when you evaluate a new distributor or vendor, you find out how much “extra” you are paying for their customer service. Call FoodSource Plus to do the work for you and identify where you can get the best pricing.

Consult the experts.

By consulting with FoodSource Plus food and supply specialists, we’ll find you the best deals, provide you with nutritious menus (or a nutrition analysis or your existing menus), and even streamline your purchasing and inventory so that you don’t waste any of the perishable food your organization is buying.

Whether you are shopping for yourself, your family or your human service organization, you want your dollar to stretch. By allowing the specialists at FoodSource Plus to help you minimize expenses while saving you time and unneeded headaches, you’ll see a big difference in your budget and operations.

Many of us grew up with the food pyramid as the symbol of healthy eating. In June of 2011, First Lady Michelle Obama unveiled the new MyPlate symbol as part of her campaign against obesity. The new image is designed to remind people about a healthful diet, with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables, which should make up half of one’s plate of food.

Mrs. Obama’s campaign against obesity is part of a growing trend of government and social service programs aimed at improving the American diet. In New York City, health officials are pushing for a 25% salt reduction foods as part of a nationwide sodium reduction initiative. While voluntary for restaurants and manufacturers, many believe that meeting the benchmarks set forth will lead to mandates similar to the trans fat ban.

Human service organizations nationwide required to report nutrition data of the meals they are serving, and one way to simplify the analysis and reporting is by utilizing NutriSource. The software program operated by FoodSource Plus provides free nutrition analysis and reports free to any FoodSource Plus customer at any time. Additionally, those agencies required to report nutrition requirements may also benefit from budget analysis, menus, recipes and production reports as part of the NutriSource food management program.
